Past SYPP Initiatives
Up one levelYouth Erasing Sexism
Born out of the Young Women's Conference, Youth Erasing Sexism is a working group of youth activists open to all young people regardless of gender who want to work on issues of sexism. We are welcome to all. We have weekly meetings where we talk about gender issues and create zines. Last year we hosted an open mike night dedicated to feminism.
Youth Undoing Institutional Racism Project
To address these issues youth created the Youth Undoing Institutionalized Racism (YUIR) project in 1999. The original partners in forming YUIR included the City of Seattle Undoing Institutional Racism group, People’s Institute for Survival and Beyond, Seattle Young People’s Project, El Centro De La Raza, Wilderness Inner-City Youth Development (WILD) and American Friends Service Committee. Youth from each organization made up the youth membership and adult staff acted as mentors and advisors for the group.
Queer Youth Rights
One of SYPP's oldest projects is the Queer Youth Rights (QYR) initiative, a youth leadership, social support, and political action group led by and for high school age queer youth and allies. QYR is a supportive group for youth that not only works to meet various needs of the queer youth community but is also very beneficial for all the youth involved.
African Youth United
African Youth United was started in the hopes of educating African youth with the history and legacies of their cultures. The project leaders recognized that in uniting African youth it meant not just African immigrant youth but all African youth.
